11:33 am PT
John Mayer, who never misses an event like this whether or not it makes any sense for him to take part, is playing an instrumental on guitar.

11:25 am PT

The golden casket containing the remains of Michael Jackson is brought onstage while a gospel choir sings.

10:30 am [PT]
Ten more minutes of nothing.

10:20 am [PT]
The stage has been silent for seven minutes since Robinson concluded. Members of the Jackson family are taking their seats in front of the stage.

10:12 am [PT]
The memorial service is under way. Smokey Robinson is now speaking, reading tribute letters from Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela. A lot of empty seats on the floor and in the media section at the moment. Everywhere else seems to be pretty full.

10:06 am [PT]
The motorcade is still working its way inside the Staples Center, with no announced starting time for the event, which was scheduled to begin at 10:00 am PT. Inside, the house lights are down.

9:55 am [PT]
Celebs at the Staples Center include Reverend Jesse Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Queen Latifah, Spike Lee and Michael Jordan. Everybody who is admitted inside gets a glossy 12-page program with lots of pix of MJ and tributes from LaToya, Tito, Rebbie and other members of the Jackson family.

9:32 am [PT]
Mariah Carey will reportedly begin the ceremony by singing "I'll Be There." Steve Wonder will sing "I Never Dreamed I'd Leave You in Summer." Jennifer Hudson will do "Will You Be There." Chris Brown and Akon are both at Staples.

9:26 am [PT]
The scene at the Staples Center now is pretty calm. A lot of people milling around with not a lot to do. Probably one cop and one media person for each member of the public.

9:20 am [PT]
The hearse and a dozen other vehicles have begun the drive to Staples.

9:15 am [PT]
The hearse and attendant cars in the procession have still not left Forest Lawn for the Staples Center. The likelihood is now that the public memorial service may not begin on time.

8:59 am [PT]
Michael Jackson's casket is being carried out of the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn and placed in a hearse.

8:54 am [PT]
From Dave Schulps at the Staples Center: Lou Ferrigno ("The Incredible Hulk") just walked by with a camera crew trailing him. Currently talking to Extra. Fans are waiting on line to get into Staples. Lines aren't terribly long.

8:50 am [PT]
There are 20 news helicopters hovering over Forest Lawn Cemetery. Rest in peace? Forget it!

8:39 am [PT]
People are being allowed into the Staples Center. The event is due to start in 80 minutes. The Reverend Al Sharpton will delive the eulogy.

CNN reports that Lionel Richie will lead an ensemble rendition of "We Are the World." Other performers scheduled to perform include Usher, Stevie Wonder, Jermaine Jackson, John Mayer and Jennifer Hudson.

8:35 am [PT]
Soundcheck is going on inside the Staples Center. An L-A TV reporter near Forest Lawn says the body and the family will be taken to the Staples Center by helicopter. (Turns out not to be true. Going by car.)

8:30 am [PT]
From Dave Schulps, our Premiere Radio Networks reporter outside the Staples Center: The media stand-up area stretches across the entire block in front of Staples. There are numerous wrist band checks required to get into the designated area. There won't be any mob scene -- other than media -- in front of Staples. I'm told that the stage area inside is very toned down. Much more church-like than rock concert-like.

There are big billboards outside Staples, and everyone coming in is signing them

8:20 am [PT] The motorcade has arrived at Forest Lawn Cemetery for Jackson's private funeral. The family is inside a building called the Hall of Liberty, a thousand-seat auditorium on the grounds.

8:15 am [PT]
Huge crowds are gathering outside the Staples Center. It's a field day for street vendors. T-shirts, buttons, photos, postcards, programs, hats, water. The most unusual? A stand with a guy selling sketches and cels from the Jacksons T-V series. They run from $25 for sketches to $375 for a cell with the whole J5.
